My research is principally concerned with the remote sensing of oceanic phytoplankton on a global scale through the modifications they induce in the color of the water as viewed from space. Phytoplankton are the first link in the marine food chain and may be a significant factor in global climate change by virtue of their ability to remove carbon dioxide from surface waters through photosynthesis.
