Graduate Program
The Department of Physics offers programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, and both thesis and non-thesis M.S. tracks are available. However, preference in admission will be give to Students seekeng a Ph.D. degree. Usually a Ph.D. student devotes the first year mostly to basic courses, and takes the qualifying exam at the first January following his arrival. Students should become involved with a research project by the second year, and after passing the qualifying exam, must present the beginnings of a research project to a committee within six months. This presentation will normally turn into a dissertation, but the student is not bound to it and can switch to another project or even another area of research later.
Consideration is given to applicants who have a B.S. degree in physics with a minimum undergraduate GPA of B. The general GRE is required and subject GRE is recommended. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must demonstrate proficiency in English via the TOEFL exam, and the minimum acceptable score for admission is 550 in the paper based test, or equivalent (80 in the Internet based test and 213 in the Computer based one).
Application deadline for the Fall semester is February 1st, and application for financial aid is made at the time of application for admission. Financial support during the academic year is available in the form of either research assistantships (RAs), teaching assistantships (TAs). Research and teaching assistantships include a stipend of $22,000 per nine months as well as a tuition stipend for 9 credits per semester.
Additional financial support during the summer is also generally available for research or teaching. Moreover, special summer research fellowships are available on a competitive basis.
Prospective students are also
eligible for the the University of Miami Fellowship. The fellowship
consists of $10,000/year, in addition to the regular stipend, for a
duration of five years. The deadline for the fellowship is the same as for
admission and no additional application is required by the student.
The cost of a single room in the dormitories is $6538 per year. (and additional $1684 for meals) per person per semester. Typical rents for off-campus apartments are $700-$800 per month for one bedroom, and $800-$1000 per month for two bedrooms. A typical rent for a room in a house off-campus is $500-$600 per month, and the cost of living is generally lower than in the urban areas of the northern and western United States.
The Department is housed in the new James L. Knight Physics Building in the Coral Gables campus. This campus occupies 260 beautifully landscaped acres in a predominantly residential area. Coral Gables is an affluent suburb of metropolitan Miami, which is the largest urban area in Florida. Downtown Miami is readily accessible by Metrorail train, which has a stop next to the campus.
Miami is a center of Latin culture and is the commercial gateway to Latin America. It offers all the amenities of a large and prosperous city, as well as an excellent oceanside climate of warm winters and moderate summers. There are many excellent restaurants and a full schedule of theater, museum exhibits, and concerts. Professional sports events and unrivaled water recreation are also among Miami's attractions.
The University of Miami was founded in 1925, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Individual programs are accredited by a total of twelve professional agencies. It is the largest private university in the Southeast, and has a full-time enrollment of more than 14,000, including more than 3,000 graduate students and 2,000 law and medical students. Two colleges and ten schools are located on the main campus in Coral Gables. The University's medical school, the fourth-largest in the United States, is situated in Miami's civic center, and the Rosentiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is located on Virginia Key. Funded research activities total over hundred million per year.
